Continuously emerging in the media concerning cases of infections acquired in hospitals, mainly in critical areas, such as resuscitation, intensive care, isolation, obstetrics, pediatric ICU and surgical wards; because of the critical condition of patients. Hospital­acquired infections are one of the main problems of the health system because they cause an increase in health spending and detract material and human resources, and even are the reason of a direct mortality.

The lack of aseptic is one of the main causes of the increase in hospital infections. The contamination of the patient environment, where the surfaces are free of germs very short time after cleaning, is a vector of transmission by direct contact with the patient, family and medical personnel.

The current situation of outsourcing policies and cuts in housekeeping complicates the application of cleaning and disinfecting protocol with the rigor required in the facilities of the characteristics of health risk areas. In many cases cleaning practices used may not be sufficient to ensure its decontamination, since the effectiveness of any agent depends on its proper application and the rigor with which the cleaning / decontamination is performed.

In this sense, the use of antimicrobial materials to treat surfaces of sanitary environment can play an important role in reducing hospital infections. These active surfaces are able to reduce microbial loads relative to a surface without external intervention and, therefore, may play a role in strengthening the regime of hygiene clinic setting. At present, there are a wide range of antimicrobial technologies to treat surfaces that are being investigated to develop systems that help control pathogens.
